How It Works

Write a Grok Imagine Prompt in Three Steps

This tool writes the prompt; you generate the image or video in Grok Imagine itself.

1. Describe the idea

Type what you want to see: who or what, where, what happens and the feeling. A sentence or two is enough.

2. Generate the prompt

The generator expands your idea into shots with a camera move, lens, lighting, color and action for each one.

3. Paste into Grok Imagine

Copy a shot, paste it into Grok Imagine, generate, and adjust the wording where the result drifts.

Which Grok?

Grok Imagine Prompts, Not Grok Chat Prompts

People searching for a "Grok prompt generator" want different things. This page is for one of them.

For Grok Imagine visuals

Use this page to write prompts for Grok Imagine, xAI's image and video generator: scenes, motion, camera and style.

Not for chatbot prompts

If you want better questions or instructions for the Grok chat assistant, this is the wrong tool; it writes visual descriptions, not conversation prompts.

Independent tool

Video to Prompt is not affiliated with xAI. This page only writes prompt text; generating, accounts, pricing and limits are all handled by Grok Imagine.

Examples

Grok Imagine Prompt Examples

Five original Grok Imagine prompts to copy and adapt: two for images, three for video. Change the subject and keep the structure.

Image: product hero shot

Example prompt

A glass bottle of cold-brew coffee on a sunlit marble counter, condensation on the glass, a few coffee beans scattered in front. Low three-quarter angle, soft morning window light from the left, shallow depth of field, clean commercial photography.

Image: stylized character

Example prompt

A cheerful robot gardener with a rounded copper body watering tomato plants on a rooftop at sunset, city skyline behind. Retro anime style, warm orange and teal palette, wide shot, crisp line art.

Video: camera move

Example prompt

A surfer paddles out at dawn on a calm sea. The camera starts low on the water behind her, then slowly rises and pulls back to reveal the empty bay and the first rays of sun. Soft golden light, gentle waves, sound of water lapping and distant gulls.

Video: dialogue

Example prompt

Inside a cozy bookshop on a rainy evening, an elderly shopkeeper looks up from the counter and says, "We close in five minutes, but take your time." Medium close-up, static camera, warm lamp light, rain pattering on the window.

Video: from an image

Example prompt

Animate the uploaded photo: the steam from the cup rises and curls, the curtain behind moves slightly in a breeze, and the camera pushes in slowly toward the cup. Keep the person, the table and the lighting exactly as in the photo.

Model Notes

Grok Imagine Model Notes

What xAI documents about Grok Imagine, and what that means for the prompt you write. Facts below come from xAI's own docs; check them again before you rely on a specific limit.

What Grok Imagine is

Grok Imagine is xAI's family of image and video generation models. xAI's Imagine API covers image generation, image editing with reference images, video generation from text or a still image, and video editing.

  • Made by xAI
  • Images and videos
  • Generation and editing

Image mode

Grok Imagine Image 2.0 generates images from text and can edit them with up to five reference images, at 1K or 2K resolution. Image prompts describe one frozen moment, so put the effort into subject, composition, light and style.

  • Text to image
  • Edits with up to 5 references
  • No motion to describe

Video mode

Grok Imagine Video 1.5 makes video from text or from an image, natively at up to 1080p, with lip-synced speech, reference images and pinned frames. A lighter 1.5 Lite model covers text or image to video up to 15 seconds. Video prompts need motion, camera and sound as well as the scene.

  • Text to video and image to video
  • Lip-synced speech
  • Reference images and pinned frames

What to put in a Grok Imagine prompt

Name the subject and setting, then the one action that happens, the camera move, the light and the style. For video, add what is heard: a line of dialogue in quotes, ambience or music. For image-to-video, describe only what should change; the picture already defines the look.

  • Subject, setting, action
  • Camera, light, style
  • Sound and dialogue for video

Tips

Tips for Better Grok Imagine Results

Small habits that make Grok Imagine prompts easier to control.

One action per clip

A single, clear action reads better than a busy paragraph. If the idea needs several beats, generate several shots and cut them together.

Name the camera move

"Slow push-in", "pan left", "static shot": a named move tells the model what the camera does and keeps the subject motion separate.

Write sound on purpose

For video with audio, decide what should be heard and put any spoken line in quotes. Leaving sound out lets the model choose for you.

Change one thing at a time

When a result misses, edit the one line that caused it and keep the rest. Saving each version shows you which wording actually helped.
